Dreams

It was at school, in grade 6. The day was out and we were heading for the buses or cars to go home. Jordan Hare was already waiting in my father's car. Kara Baisley, Sarah Hamilton, Candace Hosford and I were all supposed to go in it too. I got there first and put my stuff in the front seat, even though I was to get out first. Then I stood around and waited for the others. Mrs. Arsenault was supposed to be driving the car, so even after the girls showed up, we were waiting for her to come out. Kara came first and got in the front seat with my stuff, because she was going to be in the car the longest. I was going to make her shove over so I'd fit, but there's no middle seat in the front of Dad's Honda, so we suddenly realized that there wasn't enough room for us all. Sarah showed up and got in the back seat and I kept wondering where Candace had gotten to. She hadn't been that far behind me.

Jordan ran off as Candace came up, having changed into fancy clothes. We weren't sure where she'd gotten them. I got in the back seat beside Sarah and dozed off while waiting. Candace had sat in the front seat. When I woke up, we were on the highway, it was twilight, Candace was driving, and she had no idea where we were. I freaked out, demanded she let me drive, because I was the only one under 25 insured on Dad's car. So suddenly we'd switched spots without pulling over and I was looking for a place to turn around. I had to keep going until I found a parking lot in which to turn. In that parking lot, I realized that she'd gotten us to Doak Town, because that was the church that my parents & I always went to if we were visiting down there.

So I turned & tryed to find the highway back, because we were on the city streets. It didn't look a thing like DoakTown, if anything, like that first bit of Moncton & there were no road signs, so it took me a few minutes. Kara had put my stuff in the back seat so I told Candace to use my cell phone to call her mum because her mum was going to be mad & we didn't want her to worry.

So I finally found my way back onto the highway and we went back to the school. Kara and Sarah left us when we got there & Candace and I went in through the school. Except it had turned into the church, looking nothing like the church. We got to the kitchens & there were "day old apples" sitting on the counter, so I picked up three in the first kitchen & Candace picked up a couple too. Our arms were overflowing, so we set them all down in the second kitchen. She grabbed a Sobey's bag off the floor (it was the same kind of material at a Walmart bag, but it was labelled Sobey's) & started to fill it with apples.

I wandered back into the adjoining room & found Laura Hare going from room to room, doing a quick pickup before locking up the church. She saw me, & heard Candace from the other kitchen, and laughed at us. She told us that Candace's mother had gotten her days mixed up and wouldn't have known we were late if we hadn't called. She'd thought that today was our day for staying late at school. She cleaned the first kitchen, then the attached washroom. I figured she was going to the second kitchen, where Candace was taking apples, but she went to the second bathroom instead first. I kept wandering through the building & it seemed to be Lyttleton Church more than Boom Road & I met up with Pastor Tom. He was with some guy I didn't know. When he saw me, he laughed at me too. He told the guy beside him that here was the truant at last. And the guy beside him laughed too and stepped towards me.

Then I woke up.
