Think about it, eh?

I was sent this on Facebook. I am uncertain of it's origins, though it is attributed to Ben Stein. It seems that it might be likely it is from him. No matter who it is from, it is good and I wanted to post it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.
My confession:
I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejewelled trees, Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against.. That's what they are, Christmas trees.
It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu . If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.
I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from, that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.
Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.
In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.
Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her 'How could God let something like this happen?' (regarding Hurricane Katrina). Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, 'I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?'
In light of recent events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc.. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.
Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave, because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said okay..
Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.
Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'
Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question everything the Bible says. Funny how you can post 'jokes' or send them through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start posting or sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing it or even reading it. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.
Are you laughing yet?
Funny how when you post or forward this message, you won't send it to very many on your address list or invite many people to read it, because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you.
Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.
If you think this has any merit then spread the word and let people know. If not, then just discard it... no one will know you did. But, if you do just ignore this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.
My Best Regards,
Honestly and respectfully,
Ben Stein
Number 100, Midnight's Children
So I start my list of banned books. Here's to seeing how far I make it through. :D
Number 100: Midnight's Children, Salman Rushdie
The following is quoted from Wikipedia, for those who don't care enough to look it up.
Midnight's Children is a loose allegory for events in India both before and, primarily, after the independence and partition of India, which took place at midnight on 15 August 1947. The protagonist and narrator of the story is Saleem Sinai, a telepath with an extraordinary nose. The novel is divided into three books.
Midnight's Children tells the story of the Sinai family and the earlier events leading up to India's Independence and Partition, connecting the two lines both literally and allegorically. The central protagonist, Saleem Sinai, is born at the exact moment that India becomes independent. He later discovers that all children born in India between 12 AM and 1 AM on 15 August 1947, are imbued with special powers. Saleem thus attempts to use these powers to convene the eponymous children. The convention, or Midnight Children's Conference, is in many ways reflective of the issues India faced in its early statehood concerning the cultural, linguistic, religious, and political differences faced by such a vastly diverse nation. Saleem acts as a telepathic conduit, bringing hundreds of geographically disparate children into contact while also attempting to discover the meaning of their gifts. In particular, those children born closest to the stroke of midnight wield more powerful gifts than the others. Shiva of the Knees and Parvati, called "Parvati-the-witch," are two of these children with notable gifts and roles in Saleem's story.
Meanwhile, Saleem must also contend with his personal trajectory. His family is active in this, as they begin a number of migrations and endure the numerous wars which plague the subcontinent. During this period he also suffers amnesia until he enters a quasi-mythological exile in the jungle of Sundarban, where he is re-endowed with his memory. In doing so, he reconnects with his childhood friends. Saleem later becomes involved with the Indira Gandhi-proclaimed Emergency and her son Sanjay's "cleansing" of the Jama Masjid slum. For a time Saleem is held as a political prisoner; these passages contain scathing criticisms of Indira Gandhi's overreach during the Emergency as well as what Rushdie seems to see as a personal lust for power bordering on godhood. The Emergency signals the end of the potency of the Midnight Children, and there is little left for Saleem to do but pick up the few pieces of his life he may still find and write the chronicle that encompasses both his personal history and that of his still-young nation; a chronicle written for his son, who, like his father, is both chained and supernaturally endowed by history.
Top 100 Banned Books of All Time
My first goal is to read through the books on this list. I have some under my belt already, but I will start with number 100 and work my way up the list, book by book, already read or not. Why on earth would anybody bother banning books? Ideas, words, precious sweet taste of life. I'm surprised that the Bible did not make it on the list, all things considered. But that's fine. I read that semi-regularly as it is.
The list! The Notorious list of bandits! My first conquest, Number 100, Midnight's Children , Salman Rushdie. Can anybody tell me why Winnie the Pooh made the list though? That one confuses me. And Charlotte's Web! WHY?! I felt my brain start to die a little when I saw those two. o.O OI!
Interesting Concept
Well, I am aware that I am not a Walmart employee. I am also aware that I really have no desire to be. I like the job I have now. But this is still an interesting article. I would also strongly recommend checking out the main site as well, as it is also quite the interesting read. Hmmm. Well, I guess I had better get as much use out of my new car's tires before they are illegal.
If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do?-
What wouldn't I do? That's the true question!... I would do nothing illegal. This takes for some massive planning.
My family, my friends, an all encompassing doctor (eyes, teeth, everything else too), my cat, Kathy's cat.
Hmm. Dad.
Kathy... no wait... Mum.
Any of your friends getting married?-
YES! I CAN ACTUALLY SAY YES! HOORAY!
Name a lyric from the song your listening to right now-
Redemption is waiting at your doorstep
He is begging you to let him in now
You can put all of it off again
But where's it gonna get you in the end?
The time is now so maybe you should think things out,
Yea, take some time and think about it now.
This is the only chance to do something about it (something about it)
And don't you put it off (cause you can't live without it)
Cause the time is now
And take your life back with a vengeance
For the first time you cannot have true love
Promise me you'll never sleep again
Cause until you find the answers there's no rest.
To put to death the life you've lived in doubt
I'll show you all the things you've heard about
You are on the verge
Let go
Go on staring at the light
If you let go and just believe
You won't make a liar out of me
Come try and show me what you see
What I have is what you need
What are you looking forward to?-
The end of the Saga.
1. How did I meet 1?
You know, I am not certain. Maybe at Youth Group?? I've just known her for years and years.
2. What would I do if I never met 14?
Probably not much, as I would not realize the great loss I was suffering.
3. Would I date 20?
Hmm, can't see that she'd be all that willing.
4. Have I ever seen 11 cry?
I am uncertain. I suspect probably though.
5. The first three things I can think of about 13?
1) She has a super scooter thing. 2) She lives in one of my favourite places. 3)Uh, uh, uh, I don't see her nearly frequently enough.
6. Describe 6.
Pale little great mind. Or fool, as she prefers to think.
7. Do I like 16?
Sure I guess. I don't really know him well enough to have much of an opinion, but he noticed my birthday this year!
8. Do I think 9 is attractive?
Yuppers. There's another I don't see often enough. (The case with most people in the list, sad to say)
9. When was the last time I talked to 19?
In person? . o . O . I am not even certain if we have spoken since near the time of Graduation in 2001, though I suspect/hope we must have at one point or another. I hope so at any rate, as she is fun... and the one behind me finding this note.
10. Would 7 make a good parent?
I suspect so.
11. Where does 15 live?
To be honest, I don't know for sure. Not around here anymore. :(
12. What's the best thing about 21?
She always has a smile and kind word for me, no matter where she runs across me.
13. What would I like to tell 18 right now?
Hmm. ... ... ... ... "I still haven't forgotten about visiting those cats, honest!"
14. What is the best thing about 12?
The ease with which we can have a conversation, given how little time we spend together as a rule.
16. What's the best memory you have of 10?
Best memory of the one person with whom I have spent more time than any other?? That's asking a lot! All the times she soothed my rumpled nerves without even trying I suppose.
17. When's the next time you're going to see 15?
No guarantees that it will be before Heaven. Sure hope it will though.
18. Is 8 pretty?
Def. for sure!
19. What was your first impression of 4?
As I was barely 10 years old when I met her, I am uncertain. I liked her straight off, I know that.
20. Is 13 your best friend?
Nope. I quite like her though.
21. Have you seen 16 in the last month?
Nope. Last year, probably.
22. When was the last time you saw 14?
For certain, last summer, drive in church. (Wow, that's been over a year!)
23. Have you been to 21's house?
Once, yes.
24. When is the next time you'll see 2?
No where near soon enough, though most likely by Christmas.
25. Are you really close to 1?
Not really. We are family though, of a sort and we get along fine.
26. Would you give 20 a hug?
If she wouldn't mind, I probably would, being the huggy sort.
27. Have you ever been to 17's house?
Not since the year after Graduation. Wow, time flies.
28. Do you know a secret about 9?
I doubt it.
29. Describe the relationship between 14 and 19?
They went to Church Youth Group together and were 2 years apart in School. Beyond that, I know not.
30. What's your friendship like with 5?
I have never actually met her, to my knowledge. :( Again, she is family though. :D I seem to have lots of that.
31. Have you ever danced with 18?
Nope nope.
32. How do you know 21?
She's known me since I was an infant. I have been aware of knowing her for a year or two. Where else? Church. As is typical with most people who have known me since infancy.
33. Does 2 have a best friend?
Probably, though I am uncertain for certain.
34. Have you ever wanted to punch 4 in the face?
Nope. That is likely a very good thing as she is a mother and I am pretty certain Motherhood grants women extra magical strength.
35. Has 11 met your mother?
Yes she has. I was all hoping that number 11 WAS my mother, but never mind, that would number 10.
36. Have you traveled anywhere with 12?
Does the Movie Theatre count? If not, no.
37. If you gave 7 $100, what would they spend it on?
I suspect books. I am not precisely certain.
38. What's your best memory of 9?
Best memory. Hmm. I don't really know. She has super taste in books though. I guess the fact that she always let me read her books whenever we visited when I was a kid. She generally let me borrow them too, which is how I've come to find certain authors/series.
39. What is the one thing you most want 6 to know?
That she is going with me FOR CERTAIN after she has been presented with her LAST CHANCE, rather than not being sure.
40. What was the last thing you did with 17?
Wow. I think we got together and hung out for an afternoon at number 6's, when # 6 was still in that hellhole apartment and the little man was an infant.
41. When did you meet 3?
Sometime during my schooling.
The Big 100th Post!
Great tip - Unsure how accurate it is, but just in case, here's a heads up. Drive safe!
How to Lock Your Car and Why
I locked my car --- as I walked away I heard my car door unlock I went back and locked my car again three times. I looked around and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store. When I looked straight at them they did not unlock my car again. How to lock your car safely - While traveling, my son stopped at a roadside park. He came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later and found someone had gotten into his car, and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator briefcase.....you name it... He called the police and since there were no signs of his car being broken into - the police told him that there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device.. They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said to manually lock your car door-by hitting the lock button inside the car, that way if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim it will not be you. When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting...it does not send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain - it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be stolen. Something totally new to us...and real. Be aware of this and please pass this note on...look how many times we all lock our doors with our remote...just to be sure we remembered to lock them....and bingo someone has our code...and whatever was in the car...can be stolen.
In Grade 10.
Where's your phone right now?
In my car.
Do you have any plans for the weekend?
Yup. It's called work.
Insanely Random but Amazing Myspace Surveyy.
Are you going to answer all these questions truthfully?: That could be interesting. Sure, why not?
Whats your name?: Vicky
Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend currently? If so, do you love them?: No, but if I did, I would love them. What would be the point otherwise?
Whos your bestfriend?: I have 2. Kathy and Jacqui. I am remarkably steadfast. It has been the two of them for over 10 years now. Jax rather longer, but then, I have been friends with her longest too.
Where is he/she right now?: Probably at home.
Do you get along with your mother or your father better?: Mum. Dad and I are too much alike and we argue more.
What color are your underwear?: Currently? White.
Where did you get them?: Zellers or Walmart. I always buy the same kind, so it's hard to tell.
Do you get along better with guys or girls?: Girls.
If you had to move to another country, what would it be?: Ireland or Scotland
Whats was/is your best subject in school?: French.
Have you cheated on your current boyfriend/girlfriend?: This is a redundant question when the first question determined that I have no current.
If you had to die all of your hair a different color, what would it be?: Hot Pink
Are you wearing pants? If so, where did you get them?: Yuppers. Some used bag or shop or something. I don't bother with brand new very often.
How many times have you missed the bus this year?: I don't take the bus any more thankfully.
Do you have a bad temper?: Yup.
What do you think about Harry Potter?: I was quite addicted for a while. I am starting to outgrow him a little though.
How do you feel about hobos?: How should I feel about anybody who can't make ends meet and are often hungry or too cold/hot, without shelter and abandoned by society?
When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?: You give me a lot of choices, I never did make up my mind. Mostly a librarian though.
Do you truely love your mother?: Truly does not have an e in it. But yes. She's MINE!
Who texted you last?: ... Aliant most likely. Maybe Shelley.
What did it say?: If it was Aliant, it was a "Why are you late with our money?" demand. I forgot about them for one pay check! ONE! *grumbling*
What did you say in return?: I didn't.
What cell phone service do you have?: As previously stated, Aliant.
Do you get car sick?: Not unless I am doing something.
What does your mother drive?: 2001, Honda Civic
Whats your dream car?: Hot Pink Volkswagen Beetle.
How big is the biggest television in your house?: I'm guessing 35.
Does your mother dress tacky?: Nope.
How many siblings do you have?: One of each gender. Two extras of the sort that are not of my mother.
Do you have to do chores at home?: I should more, but not really.
Are you listening to music right now? If so, what song?: I just turned it on. Thanks for the reminder. Mandisa "My Deliverer"
Is that your favorite song?: I don't think I've heard it before, so no.
Can you count to 10 in spanish?: Uh, no.
Are you a righty or a lefty?: I wish I were both, but Righty.
Whats your cell phone number?: Ha! Like I'm that stupid!
Do you like to light candles?: I do.
Do you get your nails done a lot?: One manicure in 25.9 years of life. Hardly.
How many peircings do you have?: 4.
Do you have any ink?: Tons of pens and markers. No tats yet.
Have you ever been so drunk you dont remember anything that happened?: Thankfully no. I doubt I have drank enough in my 25.9 years of life to even half fill a 5 ounce glass. Ew.
Does your boyfriend/girlfriend know more about you then your bestfriend?: Back to a previous answer, the first question already determined that I do not have a boy/girl friend. Why are we still stuck on this??
Super Jokeses
Man I wish I could think this quickly.....
Yesterday I was buying a 2 large bags of Purina dog chow at Walmart, for my dogs Winston, Chief, Gus, and Maximus. I was about to check out when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think, that I had an elephant?
Since I had little else to do, on impulse, I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, and that I was starting the Purina Diet again, although I probably shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital last time.
On the bright side though, I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of every hole in my body and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry and that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was enthralled with my story by now.)
Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food had poisoned me. I told her no; I had stopped in the middle of the parking lot to lick my butt and a car hit me.
I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack, he was laughing so hard! WAL-MART won't let me shop there anymore.
